one mile away

Spread the Word have commissioned Kat Joyce (Writer in Residence at Spread the Word) and Nathan Curry (Theatre Director) to create a new piece of work exploring the many narratives that co-exist in the small but complex part of the city surrounding Spread the Word's office in SE11.

From Parliament to Elephant, Vauxhall Farm to Lower Marsh, Kat and Nathan will be running free writing workshops with local people who want to share their stories, contribute to making a new piece of theatre and learn about creating drama from our own narratives. The finished site-specific play One Mile Away will be performed this summer by a professional cast.

One Mile Away: Free Playwriting workshops for local people

Kat and Nathan ran several writing workshops for local people on a drop in basis, and with established groups. They included working with young volunteers at Vauxhall City Farm, older people at the Waterloo Action Centre, local writers, staff at Spread the Word and established groups at the Young Vic.

In workshop's, the following areas were explored:

- how you can generate character, narrative, story and dramatic tension from geography and place
- creating drama from our own personal narratives
- techniques for writing and shaping drama and script

No previous experience of playwriting was necessary.

Playwriting and editing

Kat is currently busy writing scenes inspired by characters and writing created at the workshops.

Previous participants are invited to attend a further workshop, to meet one another and take part in the editing and playwriting process to help shape the site specific play.

One Mile Away is due to be performed in the last week of July.
