Spread the Word has teamed up with Lucas Alexander Whitley to offer a talk for writers who want to learn more about finding an agent.
Literary agents Philippa Milnes-Smith (children’s and young adult) and Alice Saunders (adult) will provide insight, guidance and answer your questions at this FREE session.
During the talk, Philippa Milnes-Smith will look at what makes a good cover letter, how to make the best impression with your writing sample, and what to do (and not to do) to get an agent.
Please do not bring a manuscript to this event. If you are interested in formally submitting a piece for consideration, Philippa and Alice will outline at the talk how to submit.

Philippa is a specialist agent in children’s, YA and family books and entertainment. Before joining LAW in 2001, she worked as an editor and then a publisher, becoming Managing Director of Puffin Books and a director of Penguin Books. She’s a past president of the Association of Author’s Agents.
She is always looking for exciting writing for all ages, both commercial and literary, particularly work that translates well into film, television and other media. She’s had an appetite for adventure stories, ghosts and fantasy since childhood and is keen to find new voices in these genres, as well as finding different and exciting ways of approaching making and telling stories. She represents a number of creative artists who both write and design their own work and feels this is an exciting area with room for development. She would very much like to broaden the range of talent LAW represents as an agency and find genuine, new, original diverse voices with appeal to a commercial market.
Alice Saunders from Lucas Alexander Whitley Ltd (LAW) is an agent for adult fiction and non-fiction. Before joining LAW in 2001, she worked as a runner in the film industry and then as a rights manager at Quadrille Publishing.
In non-fiction, she is always on the lookout for anyone and anything food related, big ideas books and wellness titles that inspire and instruct us on how to make the world a better place. In fiction she is looking for exciting writing with a commercial edge that reflects the world we live in today. Narratives that have strong, diverse characters and an a epic scale, essentially I’ll know it when I see it!.
