Self-Editing for Fiction Writers with SK Perry

Some experts say you should do 60 minutes of editing for every 1,000 words you write. But what does this entail and how do you build an editing practice? Learn how with SK Perry, author of Let Me Be Like Water.

Editing can be a really fun part of the writing process, where characters are deepened, details refined, and the plot and structure of your work are sharpened. Editing tries to marry reader experience with your intentions as a writer, asking you to slow down and question how much your work is doing what you want it to. In this course you will learn new techniques to self-edit your writing and develop a piece of your fiction to submit for feedback from the tutor.

What will you do on the course?

This will be a very practical course, using specific editing activities to work into a fiction project you’ve got underway. We’ll also read interviews and articles by other fiction writers about their own editing process.

Who is it for?

Anyone with a fiction project underway, who are looking to refine and practice their editing skills, and who want some structure for their editing process. At the end of the course, participants will receive feedback on their project (up to 5,000 words) including a 20-minute video call with SK Perry.

Course Timetable

Course tutor SK Perry will upload assignments containing exercises and reading materials once a fortnight on the following dates:

Thursday 6 September

Thursday 20 September

Thursday 4 October

Assignments for each week will be due by the following Thursday, with feedback and discussion for the work written each week to take place between:

Assignment 1: Thursday 13 September - Wednesday 19 September

Assignment 2: Thursday 27 September - Wednesday 3 October

Assignment 3: Thursday 11 October – Wednesday 17 October

We ask that participants commit to providing feedback to at least 1 other participant for each feedback period. SK Perry will provide feedback on your final 5,000 words, which you will have developed during the course. The feedback will include a 20-minute video call.

Although this is not concrete, to help with your planning we would suggest that completing each assignment will take a minimum of 3 hours, and feedback takes around 30 minutes for one piece of work.

The course will take place online and will require you to have access to the internet in the times above. Because of this, we ask that you are confident with using simple online sharing platforms, or at least willing to explore with guidance from Spread the Word. Full instructions will be emailed to participants a week before the course starts. Although there will be no live chats, there will be opportunities to interact with other course participants via feedback and general discussion.

The course will run with a minimum of 10 participants and a maximum of 15.
