INDEPENDENTS' DAY

They will discuss their editorial approaches, how they engage with their readership and, how in a crowded publishing market, they survive and succeed. The panel discussion and audience Q&A will be followed by a choice of two expert led Master Classes: Understanding Editing and Promoting your Work.

One Mile Away

From Parliament to Elephant, Vauxhall City Farm to Lower Marsh…One Mile Away is a new play in creation.
Playwright Kat Joyce and theatre director Nathan Curry are in residence with Spread the Word to create a new play about this complex area of London, in collaboration with many local people . They have already worked with over 50 local writers and residents, young and old, at Vauxhall City Farm, the Young Vic, and at Spread The Word's offices.

One Mile Away will be an episodic play cycle. Episodes will be performed in different public locations within the one-mile-radius area between 27 and 30 July 2009. To get the full story, you’ll have to visit more than one location. All performances will be free, and there’ll be no need to book - just turn up. Keep an eye on our the project website www.onemileaway.org.uk/performances for full details of the performances.

"Arts Council England has been pleased to support the growth of Spread the Word, enabling the organisation to work in boroughs in West and now East London. Through its pioneering writer and reader development work, Spread the Word is now ideally placed to make lasting changes at a community level across many areas of London, and can play an important part in seeing that the arts - and literature in particular - are at the heart of the Thames Gateway development."
- Nick McDowell, Head of Literature, Arts Council London
