Experiment with the way you write your characters by exploring the settings in which they exist and with which they interact.

In this workshop, writers are invited to explore how a character’s interiority and exteriority interact with one another. The setting will be explored not merely as a backdrop to a story but also an active part of storytelling, whether as a reflection of the character’s state of mind or a source of prompts for both the character and the writer.
What will you do in the workshop?
Participants will immerse in examples of setting-driven character building in literature and film before responding to several visual and audio prompts to create a setting that either sparks inspiration for a new character or presents new ways to explore a character from an existing project.
What can participants expect?
Taking inspiration from examples of immersive character building from James Baldwin, Hilary Mantel, and the film Ratatouille, participants will be encouraged to engage with different senses and experiment with the portrayal of a character’s perception of the world around them.
Who is this opportunity for?
Whether you are developing your first short story or revising your novel draft, as long as you are interested in a fresh approach to building and writing characters, you are welcome.
