A series of free workshops for writers who have just started or are planning to write a full-length fiction novel.

The Basics is a course designed for early-stage writers looking to make their first steps to write a novel. Spread over five weeks, the course will be run by four award-winning debut novelists and an experienced editor. Each session will standalone, so you don’t need to sign up to each one to take part. They will also be recorded so you can catch up. 

In the fourth session, Santanu Bhattacharya, author of One Small Voice, will cover the basics of voice for a fiction novel. He will discuss what writers mean by voice and how he developed his novel. There will also be a series of exercises to help you consider and craft the voice you use in your novel.

Santanu Bhattacharya is the author of One Small Voice (Fig Tree), which was chosen as an Observer Best Debut Novel for 2023, and has been longlisted for the Author’s Club Best First Novel Award. He is the winner of the Desmond Elliott Prize Residency, the Mo Siewcharran Prize, the Life Writing Prize, and a London Writers’ Award. His second novel Deviants will be published in 2025. He grew up in India, and now lives in London.
