Stories are like medicine: it’s important to tell them at the right time, in the right way, to the right people. In this workshop, Leah Hazard, midwife and bestselling author of Hard Pushed and Womb will help you formulate your non-fiction idea and clarify your voice, incorporating reflective exercises and examples from her own publishing journey. 

What will you do in the workshop?

The workshop will include a guided exercise to develop a new approach to think about your project. There will also be a brainstorming exercise and a reflective exercise based on a non-fiction extract for discussion.

This workshop is aimed at writers who have an initial idea for a non-fiction book but are unsure where to start.

Leah Hazard studied English and American Literature and Language at Harvard University before moving to the UK to pursue a career in theatre. The births of her children prompted a change of direction, and in 2013, Leah became a registered midwife. Since then, Leah has worked in numerous clinical areas across NHS Scotland, supporting thousands of people on their journey to parenthood. Her memoir, Hard Pushed, was a Sunday Times bestseller, and her subsequent book, Womb, has been translated into 19 languages and was the 2023 Scottish Book of the Year. As a vocal advocate for positive change in maternity, Leah has contributed to the Guardian, New Statesman, Spectator and more. Her next book, Birth Wars, will be published by Allen Lane in 2027.
