Spread The Word, BUREAU and the trustees of Be My Next Inspiration are delighted to announce a new initiative in support of the Young People’s Laureate for London.

Launching on Tuesday 31 July 2018 with a poetry block party, Be My Next Inspiration recognises poetry as a craft that can inspire us all. It offers a chance to reflect on the city of today; it creates opportunities for unheard voices to be heard; and it allows us to notice what matters most, through the words of young Londoners.

The new initiative, a collaboration between Spread the Word and creative agency BUREAU, aims to help young people new to poetry to understand the excitement and opportunities that words can offer them. More than this, it is a powerful statement showing that young people are being listened to.

Six of London’s finest young poets will perform to guests from the creative industries. Those guests will be challenged by the poets’ words to create a new piece of work in any medium, whether an artwork, a poster, a t-shirt, a blog post…

The poets performing at the party are: Momtaza Mehri, the Young People’s Laureate for London; her predecessor, Caleb Femi; James Massiah, poet and DJ from South London; Zia Ahmed, former Roundhouse Slam winner; writer poet and journalist Bridget Minamore and the poet and visual artist, Ella Frears.

The final work, inspired by the poems, will be unveiled on Thursday 27 September.
