Deptford Literature Festival Fringe Events – Lewisham Comedy Novices Showcase and TOKEN Magazine Anthology x Deptford Lit Fest Launch

In the lead up to this year’s Deptford Literature Festival on Saturday 18 March 2023, there are two free fringe events all are welcome to attend.

1. Lewisham Comedy Novices Showcase

Monday 13 March 2023, 7.00 – 8.30pm at The Fellowship Inn, Bellingham. Free.

Join us for a thrilling showcase of new stand up comedy by participants from the Lewisham Comedy Novices programme, hosted by comedian Bentley Browning.

Working with Phoenix Community Housing during January and February, Lewisham Comedy Novices invited local housing association residents and tenants the chance to try something new by giving stand-up comedy a go in a positive and encouraging environment via a series of workshops led by Bentley.

Come and support our Comedy Novices who will be performing their debut routines.

Lewisham Comedy Novices was run by Spread the Word and funded by Phoenix Community Chest.

2. Tales from the City Launch Party: TOKEN x Deptford Literature Festival

Friday 17 March 2023, 6.30 – late at Isla Ray Café, 37 Deptford High Street. Free.

Join a celebration of the launch of TOKEN’s first ever anthology: Tales from the City, a gorgeous collection of short stories and creative non-fiction on food, climate and nature by established and emerging London writers.

The evening will include readings from some of the contributors and the opportunity to grab a complimetary copy (and get it signed).

The anthology features eleven stories by Londoners exploring the themes of food, climate and/or nature. Including stories from: Marie-Claire Amuah, Santanu Bhattacharya, Angel Dahouk, Anne Elicaño-Shields, Suyin Haynes, Carmen Hoang, Farhana Khalique, Yuebai Liu, Lola Pereira, Kari Pindoria, Priscilla Yeung and artwork by Raahat Kaduji.

The evening will be chilled and fun at Isla Ray, Deptford, which will be serving an array of drinks and snacks. The readings will be on from 7:30 PM so be sure to get there early!

The anthology was commissioned by Deptford Literature Festival and, if you can’t make the launch, you can pick up your free copy at the Festival Marketplace in Deptford Lounge on Saturday 18 March.
